Vital Roots Heritage Blend by Joy & Vitality Centre is inspired by the long history of four-botanical herbal preparations. This distinctive blend combines burdock root, sheep sorrel, rhubarb root, and slippery elm bark into a rich, earthy, naturally caffeine-free herbal infusion.

Unlike conventional teas made primarily from leaves and flowers, Vital Roots Heritage Blend is designed for traditional decoction, a preparation method that gently simmers botanicals in water to extract their characteristic flavours and naturally occurring compounds.

The finished infusion has a warm amber colour, soft woody notes, and a subtle tart character from sheep sorrel and rhubarb.

The Four Botanicals

Burdock Root (Arctium lappa)

Burdock has an established place in traditional European and Asian herbal practices. Its root contributes earthy, slightly sweet notes and a rich botanical character to the finished infusion.

Sheep Sorrel (Rumex acetosella)

A traditional botanical recognized for its naturally tart, green flavour. Sheep sorrel adds brightness and contrast to the deeper notes of the roots and bark.

Rhubarb Root (Rheum spp.)

Rhubarb root has a long history of use in traditional herbal preparations. It contributes woody, bitter, and slightly tart characteristics. Certain medicinal rhubarb species also contain naturally occurring anthraquinones with stimulant laxative activity.

Slippery Elm Bark (Ulmus rubra)

Slippery elm bark is traditionally valued for its mucilage content, which develops a characteristic smooth texture when mixed with water. It adds a mellow quality to the infusion.

How to Prepare – Traditional Decoction

Add 1 tablespoon (approximately 6–8 g) of the blend to 500 mL of water. Bring to a gentle simmer for 10–15 minutes. Remove from heat, cover, and allow to steep for an additional 20–30 minutes. Strain before serving.

Alternative Cup Method: Add 1 teaspoon of the blend to 250 mL of just-boiled water. Cover and steep for 10–15 minutes, then strain.
